Equal Employment Opportunity
what actually is?
Equal employment opportunity is a concept that emphasizes that all individuals should have equal access to employment opportunities, regardless of their ethnic origin, political affiliation, religion, sex, race, color, gender, pregnancy, spirituality, belief, disability, military status, genetic information, or age, which has no bearing on their skills, performance, or ability.
The purpose of this concept is that no one is rejected as a result of discrimination. But in doing so it doesn't guarantee that a potential employee will be hired.
Employees have a right to equal opportunities in:
- Hiring.
- External and internal recruiting.
- Compensation.
- Interviewing job candidates.
- Termination.
- Applications for employment.
- Pay scale.
- Pre-employment testing.
- Benefits.
- Background investigations.
- Working conditions.
- Perquisites.
- Lay-off or downsizing.
- Exercising of legal rights.
- Demotions.
- Promotions.
- Transfers.
- Disciplinary actions.
- Leave management.
- Dress and appearance.
Private companies, employment agencies, local entities, State and private own institutions, corporations must follow the rules set and avoid discrimination in any form.
Equal employment opportunity laws were created to protect employees from discrimination in the workplace. The objective is to encourage people from various backgrounds to collaborate in a harmonious environment.
Advantages of Equal Employment Opportunity.
1.Improves overall recruitment process.
When an organization embraces the concept of equal employment opportunity in HRM, an open and transparent recruitment process can be established. If potential employees are aware of the unequal decisions made during the recruitment process, they will apply for roles with greater opportunities.
Equal employment opportunity will assist in determining a person's qualifications. This will also enable a company to develop a competent group of talented employees with the best abilities, skills, and know-how to perform torturous and challenging tasks while ensuring the company's overall growth and development.
2.Enhance customer satisfaction.
Simply happy employees make customers happy. When employees contribute positively to an organization's success, clients can rest assured, as it establishes sound regulations to ensure a safe and pleasant place of work for all. A workplace that promotes employee contentment is more likely to hit significant benchmarks and produce excellent results, which leads to better customer relations and increased customer satisfaction and retention.
3.Encourages employee engagement.
Equal employment opportunity is a meaningful tool to enhance workplace active participation. The policies allow employees to engage with one another without fear of discrimination based on religion, sex, race, or other factors.
Equal employment opportunity encourages mutual respect, friendliness, and integrity, as well as a work environment that encourages willingness for good behavior and a better work environment.
Employee engagement is a proven fact that enhances efficiency and productivity while also expanding the scope of skills and knowledge within a company.
4.Protects business and people.
Employers primary need is to safeguard and protect the interest of the business and its people.
Employers are vigilant enough to address any workplace concern before it becomes an issue, and this is only possible through the implementation of concepts such as equal employment opportunity. Organizations encourage employees to identify, report, and resolve discriminatory issues so that they do not spread throughout the organization or harm staff members.
Other than that people tend to look upon companies that bring a lasting mark on others, so organizations with policies like equal employment opportunity can establish and manage a strong and compelling brand image among their target audience and the industry.
Disadvantages of Equal Employment Opportunity.
Surprisingly this concept too has some disadvantages.
1.Even if everyone speaks the same language, communication may be more difficult in a diverse workforce.
2.Workers from cultures that place a high value on deference to leadership may be hesitant to speak up unless prompted.
3.Employees' standards of politeness may vary considerably.
4.Employees may be self-conscious about what they say or tell jokes for fear of offending someone unintentionally.
5.Employees with racist views may not be able to keep their opinions in check. This can lead to a tense and hostile work environment.
6.Employees from various groups may form social circles and avoid interacting with members of other groups, reducing the benefits of diversity.
7.Many businesses require highly specialized skills that only certain people can provide. Even if there is no deliberate discrimination, this can significantly decrease diversity.
8.Majority of women become mothers during their careers. An employer who is having a workforce in which majority of women are middle aged might have to face a tricky problem when granting maternity leaves for majority of them at once.

Based on Hitesh Bhasin (2020) Blog, all employees should have same opportunity in the organization without considering origin, political association, religion, gender, pregnancy, etc. Then organization is providing opportunities to all employees considering their performance. Then all employees are putting maximum effort to do their job because they are feeling that organization is giving true value for the effort.
